Genealogies

The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
Matthew 1:1 KJV

A couple of weeks ago I received a phone call from my sister. In a calm voice she told me that my mother was in the hospital. Phrases like “congestive heart failure” and “fluid around the lungs and heart” popped up and my anxiety grew. Little did I know that these were just guesses.

My relationship with my mother, really most of my side of the family, has been weak if anything and I have regretted that more and more the older that I get. Past interactions had lead to this situation where I had to come to grips that I didn’t really know much about my side of the family. So while in the hospital I asked my Mother about our history and have begun the task of devising a genealogy.

Meanwhile, I have desired to change my Bible study technique and decided to start with the Gospel of Matthew. What should I find there, but the genealogy of Jesus Christ, ben David, ben Abraham.

It is in Matthew that we find the genealogy of Jesus Christ through Joseph. I have heard this genealogy referred to as the “legal” genealogy of Jesus through Joseph which would give Jesus ties to the throne of David. Therefore, we find the legal authority for the royal reign of Jesus as King of Israel.

Yet, in this list we find such a varied list of people through which our LORD and Savior came. The Seed of the Woman (Gen 3:15) came through kings and harlots, liars and leaders. Yet, he came. He came through Abraham, the father of a multitude and friend of God.

And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do; Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
Genesis 18:17-19 KJV

This is just the first step down the Hebraic lineage of Jesus. More will follow. I intend to jot some more notes and thoughts here. Time to give this blog a bit more content. God Bless!

( By the way, my mother is doing much better now. She’s out of the hospital at home finishing her recovery, to which the doctors finally decided that she only had some “really bad/strong virus”; her heart is fine and she is in good spirits. )
